ARCHIVED - Valencia region begins issuing EU Digital Covid certificate
The certificate will be issued in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castellon from this week.
The Valencia region's health department will begin issuing EU Digital Covid certificates from today, Monday, June 7, to "safely facilitate the free movement within the EU during the pandemic".
As international travel is gradually reactivated following the lifting of travel restrictions in many European countries, Spain has given the responsibility of issuing the digital Covid 'green' certificates to each of the 17 Autonomous Communities.
The certificate will allow free movement within the EU for three categories of travellers: those who can show a recent negative PCR test, those who have recently recovered from Covid and those who are fully vaccinated.
The aim is to streamline and 'fast track' entry and exit procedures between countries within the European Union and certificates are expected to be available in all EU Member States from July 1.
In Spain, Valencia is one of the first regions to start issuing the digital certificates, available in English, Castellano and Valencian, online and "in record time".
They will be issued free of charge in electronic or paper version on request, with proof of a medical SIP card.
To find out more about applying for a 'green' travel certificate, visit the regional government's coronavirus portal or contact your local health centre.
There are three types of digital certificate.
The first is the Covid Digital Certificate of Vaccination which certifies that the traveller has received one or two doses of one of the vaccines approved by the EU. This certificate is valid for 365 days after the date of vaccination.
The second is the Covid Digital Certificate of Recovery which certifies digitally, in the QR code, that the holder has recovered from coronavirus after having tested positive with a PCR test. This certificate will be valid for 180 days from the end of the isolation period (day 11 after the positive PCR test):
And the third is a Digital Covid Test Certificate that proves the traveller has received a negative Covid diagnostic test result, which can be either PCR or antigen.
In the case of the PCR test the result will be valid for 72 hours and the antigen test will be valid for 48 hours, though the latter must have been performed using one of the commercial kits approved by the EU.
In principle, holders of an EU Digital Covid Certificate should be exempt from restrictions on free movement within Europe, so Members States shouldn't impose additional travel restrictions "unless they are necessary and proportionate to safeguard public health".
For this reason, it's advisable to still check travel requirements of each country before travelling.
