ARCHIVED - Turning silence into art: Alicante hosts textural exhibition until February 26
'Textura del silencio' is one of two exhibitons being held at Lonja Fish Market in Alicante until February 26
An impressive six-metre long structure made up of 8,000 pieces of coal and suspended from the ceiling with 740 ropes is the centrepiece of an alternative exhibition that will be on public display at Alicante's Lonja Fish Market until February 26.
Artist and Doctor of Fine Arts, Antonio Navarro, unveiled his 'Textura del Silencio' collection last month, filling the Salas de Abarca and Luceros rooms of the municipal exhibition hall with 37 pieces made from black materials, the culmination of six years work.
Navarro always works in silence and says his work, which includes floating or three-dimensional sculptures, is "produced as such".
"The collection is an act of meditation, repetition and accumulation of elements that gives body and fluidity to the pieces by adding texture to the absence of words," he explains.
Navarro prides himself on creating "non-noble or non-fine art" using materials such as coal and paper.
"I am particularly interested in the colour black because it is the most neutral, the most all-encompassing and the most magical," adds Navarro.
