ARCHIVED - Tourist plunges off cliff into the sea whilst taking selfie in Benidorm
The 26-year-old woman fell off a railing at Castell de Benidorm in the Marina Baixa, Alicante province
A Ukrainian tourist’s attempt to take a dramatic selfie almost cost her her life when she fell from a railing at the popular tourist attraction, Castell de Benidorm, and plunged into the sea.
According to eye witnesses, the 26-year-old had climbed onto one of the railings to get the perfect shot with Levante beach in the background and lost her balance, tumbling over the side and hitting the rocks before falling into the sea.
112 Emergencies received a call at around 6pm on Tuesday September 14, and the Lifeguard and Rescue Service were quickly on the scene. Despite the rough sea conditions – the red flag had been raised – one of the lifeguards managed to reach the unconscious and badly hurt woman and pull her to safety before a rescue boat transported her to Benidorm port.
An intervention tent had been set up at the port and medical teams managed to resuscitate the victim, who sustained a number of serious injuries and was suffering from hypothermia. She was taken to Alicante General Hopsital where she remains.
The young woman had apparently been visiting Benidorm with a friend when the accident occurred.
