ARCHIVED - Torrevieja unveils sculpture in tribute to Covid victims
An official ceremony will be held in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province, "once the pandemic situation permits"
A sculpture in tribute to the victims of Covid has been unveiled in the Paseo Marítimo de Juan Aparicio, bearing the inscription 'Torrevieja to the victims of Covid-19. You left in solitude, but you will remain forever in our memory'.
Created by Crevillente artist Pepe Miralles, the iron sculpture depicts two people embracing on top of a stone base and is one of a number of projects carried out as part of a 'Hugs with Soul' initiative launched by non-profit association Alarum.
"The work of art depicts the embrace of compassion, a feeling that makes us more human and allows us to understand the pain of others", explains Alarum representative Emi Alilaga, adding: "It unites us all in the special remembrance of the deceased".
While Miralles said he was inspired to symbolise "all the hugs we have not been able to give during the pandemic".
Town mayor, Eduardo Dolon, has announced that once "the pandemic situation permits", a "great act of homage to all the victims" will be held, with special recognition to the health workers, emergency services and others who have "helped to mitigate the effects of this tragedy".
'Hugs with Soul' aims to build awareness and create lasting memorials in tribute to those who have died of Covid and also in celebration of life. As such, an olive tree will be planted in each school in Torrevieja "as a constant reminder" and various student workshops and activities will be held.
