ARCHIVED - Torre Pacheco continues works to minimise flooding with Rambla Sur project
The Town Hall’s objective is to rapidly evacuate water from urbanized areas of Torre Pacheco following heavy rain
The Rambla Sur Project in Torre Pacheco aims to prevent future floods by ensuring the ramblas in the municipality are better equipped to deal with heavy rain, and includes work to deepen existing infrastructures as well as build new channels and bridges.
The mayor of Torre Pacheco and Urban Planning Technician Antonio León visited the prospecting works in Avenida de Fontes this week where the construction of a bridge will facilitate the adequate drainage of water following episodes of torrential rain. The aim of the project is to ensure quicker drainage of overflow waters from the centre of Torre Pacheco, particularly on Calle Emilio Zurano, Calle Pedro López and the surrounding areas of the golf course.
The part of the rambla infrastructure being improved was badly damaged during the ‘Gota Fría’ storm in 2019, which caused heavy flooding throughout the Region of Murcia, and is currently being deepened so that, during the rainy season, the rainwater can be swiftly and continuously evacuated without causing flooding or damages.
In addition to preventing flooding, the mayor has indicated that the spot will be remodelled as a recreation area, complete with new street lighting, improved footpaths, green areas and gym equipment. The improved rambla will then provide a natural link between San José Obrero and the centre of the town.
This new stage of the project is set to begin with a study of the land, particularly to check the composition of the different layers of soil up to a depth of 8 metres.
