ARCHIVED - Three thousand solar panels to be installed on council buildings in Alicante
Alicante Council also plans to pedestrianise a busy section between the Central Market and La Explanada
Alicante City Council is investing almost one million euros installing photovoltaic solar panels on the roofs of municipal buildings across the city in a bid to achieve "energy self-sufficiency".
Over the next six months, panels will be installed at 30 council-owned premises, including the Town Hall, Local Police HQ and markets.
"There will be 3,063 photovoltaic modules without electrical accumulation and with a system for measuring and recording power and solar data," explained Councillor for Infrastructures and Maintenance, José Ramón González, adding: "This is the second phase of the project to install energy self-sufficiency panels in Alicante, following on from one already being applied in 33 schools in the city, which is expected to reduce electricity consumption by 26% from next year."
The large-scale installation is being co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of aid for low-carbon economy projects promoted by local authorities.
Meanwhile, the council has approved a 1,479-euro scheme to pedestrianise Avenida Constitución and calles Bailén and Castaños.
"These are the final steps to create a continuous pedestrian corridor between the Central Market and La Explanada," González, and work is expected to begin this month.
A further two million euros will be spent renovating and modernising the Pitiu Rochel municipal sports pavilion, with a completion period of 10 months.
