These are the best red wines La Rioja, Spain has to offer
Buy Spanish Rioja red wines online through the 8Wines store
There are two main varieties of Spanish red wines that you will be offered if you go to a bar or restaurant in Spain: Rioja and Ribera. The names of these two Spanish wines come from the area which they’re grown in – La Rioja and Ribera del Duero, respectively.
Which one you prefer is purely a matter of taste, but they have very distinctive flavours, being grown in different conditions in different types of soil in two separate parts of northern Spain.
Rioja red wines are often made using Tempranillo grapes and generally have a bold, smokey and tannic nature with a rich, full-bodied flavour.
Wines from La Rioja are recognised as some of the very top in Spain, as the region was the first in the whole country to achieve DOCa status (‘Denominación de Origen Calificada’ or Denomination of Qualified Origin), which is the highest category in Spanish wine regulations. This certifies that Rioja wines have above-average grape prices and quality controls on their grapes and wine production that are particularly stringent.
Rioja wines come in lots of varieties, from young Crianzas and Reservas to meatier vintages like the Gran Reserva, which are aged for longer in oak than any other Spanish red.
So, if you’ve already tried Ribera del Duero red wines and want to expand your Spanish wine palate, try a classis Rioja wine like the Baigorri De Garage Rioja or the Marqués de Murrieta Gran Reserva.
You can shop online and get Spanish Rioja wines delivered straight to you via the 8Wines online wine store.
