Extensive work will be carried out on the Campo de Cartagena, Crevillente and La Pedrera canals in the Region of Murcia and Alicante province
The Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS) has allocated more than 1.3 million euros to carry out extensive maintenance and conservation work to ensure the "effective and efficient continuity" of the Tajo-Segura post-diversion infrastructures. After more than 40 years in operation, the objective is to improve upstream water supply to around 2.5 million inhabitants and 126,000 hectares of irrigated land, sustained by the Main Canal of the Left Bank, Campo de Cartagena Canal, Crevillente and Impulsión Canal and Pedrera Canal.According to the CHS, which has put the project out to tender, the canals and equipment are nearing the end of their "useful life", and require crucial maintenance given the intensive use over the last four decades. And it has stressed that if the work is not carried out, it could lead to successive breakages and stoppages in the normal operation of the canals. In addition to maintenance and conservation of the water irrigation channels, the tender will include an 'after service', with guarantees that any future breakages or stoppages will be dealt with "immediately" to minimise any interruptions. The project is part of CHS's policy, supported by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), to efficiently manage physical assets that represent an "immense hydraulic heritage and service to society".Last month it was announced that farmers in the Campo del Mar Menor, Totana and Cieza will receive just over seven million euros of funding to modernise irrigation equipment in the face of troubling water quality in the Segura River.Image: Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura (CHS)
