ARCHIVED - Storms and heavy rain lead to power outages in Torrevieja
Up to 24 litres of water per square metre fell in just a few hours in the Vega Baja town, Alicante province
Dozens of homes in Torrevieja were left without electricity on Tuesday morning, September 21, following heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning.
The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Los Balcones, in the south of municipality, where 24 l/sqm accumulated within the space of a few hours.
The storms and heavy rain caused power outages in various parts of the town, but in particular in the Avenida Don Juan de Austria area, and a spectacular lightning show was photographed off La Mata beach.
According to data collected by the Blitzortung network, with which the Mastral Project collaborates with a lightning detector in Torrevieja, a total of 15 strikes were registered in the municipality between Monday evening and the hearly hours of Tuesday morning.
Meanwhile, firefighters had a busy night, rescuing vehicles and helping bail water from properties at risk of flooding and plugging burst drains.
Elsewhere in the Vega Baja area of Alicante province, 23 l/sqm of rain fell during the early hours of Tuesday in Los Montesinos, up to 14 l/sqm was recorded in Orihuela, 13 l/sqm in San Fulgencio and 7.4 l/sqm in Bigastro.
