ARCHIVED - Spanish Navy called in to dispose of German aircraft bomb discovered off the coast of Aguilas
The explosive device was located next to a sewage pipe in the port of Águilas
A potentially deadly German SD50 aviation bomb located in the port of Águilas has been neutralised by an Explosives Disposal Team from the Navy’s Anti-Mine Divers Unit. The artefact was discovered by a Lorca diver working for the ‘Club de Buceo la Almadraba’ dive club who immediately notified the State Security Forces.
The complex operation was led by the bomb squad but a detailed meeting was held at the port on Friday morning (November 25) before the divers hit the water, and emergency services were on stand-by throughout in case of an accident.
Fortunately though, the delicate procedure was carried out without a hitch and the bomb was quickly located beside a sewage outlet pipe at a depth of sixteen metres. After carrying out the first controlled detonation, the Navy divers discovered that the device contained almost 17 kilograms of TNT.
The bomb was then towed further out to sea where a second detonation was activated to ensure that the explosive was fully neutralised, and the ocean floor was cleared of all debris to avoid any possible environmental impact.
