ARCHIVED - Spain to appear before EU court for failure to protect Mar Menor
Spain will have to give explanations in court for the insufficient measures taken to tackle pollution in the Mar Menor, among others
Spain will be called to appear before the European Court of Justice for the lack of measures taken to protect its waters from nitrate run-off by agricultural irrigation. The European Commission has condemned Spain’s failure to comply with the requirements of EU legislation in this area.
In this regard, Europe has stressed that, despite some progress, “Spain must still adopt additional measures to prevent eutrophication throughout the country” and in specific areas such as the Mar Menor and the Campo de Cartagena aquifer.
Eutrophication is when a body of water is enriched with minerals and nutrients, causing algal bloom and other imbalances in the ecosystem.
As well as Spain being held to account by the European courts, local Murcian courts have recently decided to take CHS bosses, government top brass and the CEOs of agricultural companies to task in criminal court too.
The Region of Murcia may even demand damages from them of up to 19.5 million euros, although the regional government has come under fire for consistently spending well under their budget on cleaning up the Mar Menor.
