ARCHIVED - Spain overtakes the UK with 54 per cent fully vaccinated against Covid
Over 30 million people in Spain have received at least one coronavirus vaccine dose
The coronavirus immunization campaign got off to a slow start in Spain, dogged by supply problems and a series of scandals in which prominent figures were shown to have “jumped the queue” in receiving their first jabs, but the situation has improved to the extent where Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was able to tweet proudly on Saturday that the proportion of the population fully vaccinated now exceeds the figures in the UK and other major western countries.
In absolute terms, the latest data published on Friday by the Ministry of Health show that 25,398,978 people in Spain are now fully vaccinated, equating to 53.5 per cent of the population, while data gathered by Our World in Data reported a figure of 54.3 per cent. This compares favourably with the 54.1 per cent of the UK and Canada, 48.6 per cent in the USA, 48.2 per cent in Germany, 45.7 per cent in the EU as a whole, and 13.6 per cent worldwide.
However, it should not be inferred from the data selected that Spain is leading the world in terms of coronavirus protection. In Israel 61 per cent of the population have received both vaccine doses, according to the same source, in the Channel Island of Jersey the figure is 62 per cent and in the United Arab Emirates a figure of 68 per cent has already been achieved.
Meanwhile, as vaccination continues to reach more and more young adults in Spain, as many as 30 million people (or 64.3 per cent of the population have received at least one vaccine dose), and when only the target population of those aged over 12 are taken into account the proportion reaches 72.4 per cent. Full vaccination has been given to 60.3 per cent of over-12s, and in the northern region of Asturias this figure rises to 70.6 per cent.
