ARCHIVED - Spain approves extradition of British murder suspect
Fugitive David Ungi, 30, was arrested in a gym in Marbella back in May and was fighting his extradition to the UK
One of the UK’s most wanted fugitives, 30-year-old David Ungi, has lost his extradition battle in the Spanish courts this week. Once final approval has been granted, the suspect will be flown back to Britain to face trial for the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Vinny Waddington in Liverpool in 2015.
Ungi fled the UK within 24 hours of the murder and was immediately placed on the wanted list. Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) believed the fugitive was hiding out in Spain and the authorities finally tracked him to Coin near the southern resort of Marbella on May 5 this year, where he was arrested at a shopping centre gym.
Two other men were convicted of Waddington’s murder in 2016 but Ungi avoided prosecution at the time by going on the run. He is also wanted by Merseyside Police in connection with heroin trafficking in Liverpool.
Steve Reynolds, National Crime Agency regional manager in Spain, said: “Ungi is a very dangerous person and his arrest is good news for communities both in Liverpool and Spain.”
The fugitive launched an appeal against his extradition to the UK back in July, claiming that Spain is now his home and that he wants to remain close to his family and young daughter, who live in Malaga. This request was formally denied on Wednesday September 21.
