ARCHIVED - Signage highlighting motorcycle traffic deaths installed on Alicante roads as deterrent
Signs have been positioned in several accident blackspots including La Nucia, Alcoy and Agost
The Direccion General de Traffico (DGT) in Alicante has installed signage detailing the number of injuries and fatalities in motorcycle incidents in accident black spots as part of a campaign to raise driver awareness.
Given the increase in road traffic accidents involving motorcycles in the province of Alicante in recent years, the DGT has launched a new initiative to promote safer driving. In the seven municipalities where the most incidences have occurred, posters have been erected showing how many people have been injured or have died in the past five years.
In the seven targeted stretches of road, some fifty-six motorcycle accidents have been recorded in the past few years. According to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, while the vast majority of these incidents resulted only in minor injuries, twelve people were seriously injured while seven others lost their lives.
Although the intention of the campaign is to improve road safety by raising awareness among motorcycle drivers, the posters do not specify the number of fatalities on each stretch of road; rather, the total number of those who have been injured or have died is listed.
The first posters were installed between Alcoy and Benilloba, where five people have been involved in accidents involving motorcycles in the past five years. Elsewhere on the CV-70, posters have been erected on a particularly windy section of road from Benasau to Confrides. The third section affected is in the Marina Baixa area of Benimantell, while along the CV-80 posters have been installed between l'Alcoià and l'Alacantí.
Continuing south, the CV-827 has been marked as an accident black spot between the municipality of Tibi to Agost, while the last series of warning signs appear on the CV-760 between Altea and La Nucia.
