ARCHIVED - Seven minor earthquakes in under 36 hours in north-west Murcia
The tremors in Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz measured up to 2.5 mbLg
A total of seven minor earthquakes were recorded in the far north-west of Murcia in the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday mornings, none of them measuring over 2.5 mbLg (equivalent to the Richter scale at these low intensities) but indicating a burst of seismic activity at depths of between 2 and 10 kilometres beneath the Earth’s crust.
The first spate of tremors was recorded between 11.51 on Tuesday evening and 1.55 on Wednesday morning, the strongest of them measuring 2.5 mbLg. These were followed by three more between 2.52 and 4.16 on Thursday morning, the most intense this time measuring 2.1.
The epicentres of all but one of the seven tremors were in the municipality of Moratalla, the other being in Caravaca de la Cruz, and all were focussed in a small area between Archivel and the boundary between Murcia and the province of Albacete. No reports have been received of residents in these rural areas noticing the ground shaking.
