ARCHIVED - San Javier Town Hall negotiating to buy the Casa Barnuevo in Santiago de la Ribera
Plans are afoot for the installation of several new sculptures in Santiago de la Ribera and La Manga
The Tuesday afternoon meeting of the council of San Javier was transferred this week to the Casa Barnuevo, one of the most emblematic buildings in Santiago de la Ribera, a significant gesture given that the Mayor, José Miguel Luengo, is negotiating the possible purchase of the historic building with the current owners.
The fact that an official valuation of the Casa Barnuevo has been contracted responded to one of the questions raised during the meeting by Mauricio Ruiz, the local council leader in Santiago de la Ribera.
This house is right on the seafront of Santiago de la Ribera alongside the church and is one of the most important properties of the municipality, having being built by the family of the man after whom it is named, as is the main promenade of the seaside resort: In 1888 a preacher named José María Barnuevo founded a new village on the shore of the Mar Menor, and named it after the religious and military order to which he belonged, the Orden Militar de Santiago. This village, of course, was Santiago de la Ribera, and along with the first houses the church dedicated to Santiago Apóstol was also built in time for the town’s founding father to be buried there.
Other topics touched upon during the meeting included the progress towards awarding contracts for the renovation of pavements in Santiago de la Ribera and the plans to install two sculptures in the district, one in homage to local fishermen and the other a tribute to the cadets at the nearby Spanish air force officer training academy, the Academia del Aire.
The Town Hall is also planning a third sculpture in La Manga in memory of all those who have given their lives for Spain, and back in Santiago de la Ribera yet another monument is in the pipeline to highlight the importance of the local Carnival celebrations.
