ARCHIVED - Sales of warm clothing and heaters catapult in Alicante as temperatures drop
Demand for heating appliances has tripled in Benidorm
Freezing temperatures in Alicante province due to a cold snap has led to a welcome boost for businesses selling electrical appliances and warm clothing.
Heaters have become one of the most sought-after items, with an average sales increase in the province of 40% over the last couple of weeks, although in areas that are usually slightly warmer during the winter, such as Benidorm, the demand for cookers and heaters has tripled.
Large department stores have also reportedly reached pre-Covid figures for the sale of warm clothing, whilst smaller establishments have seen an increase in demand of between 20 and 30%.
Butane cookers are apparently highly sought after in the midst of a cold snap, but are in short supply due to distribution problems in China where most of the appliances come from.
According to the Milar shop in Benidorm, a delivery of butane cookers in December sold out as soon as it arrived.
"We notice the impact of every variation in temperature on our turnover. From selling 20% more heating appliances, cookers, heat emitters and air conditioners than usual a couple of weeks ago, we have gone up to 300% as the weather has got colder. But there has been a major stock shortage of butane cookers and we have gone a month without the product," explained owner Raúl Parra.
The delay is being attributed in part to international cargo traffic issues, but despite this shortage, the sale of electrical appliances for heating homes have soared.
The demand for butane bottles has grown by 8% in two days in Alicante city and Alcoy, where temperatures have dropped well below zero, and electric heater sales have risen by an average of 40% compared to the second week in January.
Meanwhile, like warm clothing, sales of blankets and duvets have also reached levels similar to 2019, "because people continue to invest more in their homes" whether it's hot or cold, according to Vicente Armengol, president of the traders' association Corazón de Alicante (Heart of Alicante).
