ARCHIVED - Rojales hands over free plot of land for 10-million-euro centre for the elderly
The new facility in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, will also house centres for people with chronic mental illnesses and rehabilitation
A new residence for the elderly looks set to become a reality in Rojales after the local council agreed the free transfer of a 18,000m2 plot of land in Avenida de Argentina on which the 10-million-euro facility will be built.
In addition to a centre for the elderly, the regional government announced in March, the facility will also house a specific centre for people with chronic mental illnesses and a rehabilitation and social integration centre on the same plot of land.
Whilst the land has been secured and a budget allocated, there are still a number of administrative processes to go through before work can begin, although the development is due to be put out to tender imminently.
Specifically, the land must be incorporated into the Generalitat's General Inventory of Assets and Rights, as "property destined for the public social welfare service".
According to the general director of Social Services, Enric Juan, the project is part of the Social Infrastructure Plan to promote better services across the Valencia region, "in those areas with the greatest need for additional resources".
"Based on the needs map designed by the Department of Equality and Inclusive Policies, the Vega Baja region is a priority for the social services department due to the low coverage of social resources it currently has," said Juan.
