ARCHIVED - Road traffic accidents in Alicante almost 40 per cent higher than a decade ago
There were 1,254 recorded accidents on Alicante roads in 2021, 348 more than in 2011
The number of road traffic accidents on roads in Alicante province remains 38% higher than a decade ago, despite figures falling in recent years.
According to data from the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, 1,254 accidents were recorded on interurban roads Alicante in 2021, 90 fewer than in 2019, but 348 more than in 2011.
There were fewer incidents with victims - not only fatalities but also injuries - than in 2019, but both figures exceed the best recorded in the last decade: in 2013 there were fewer road deaths, and in 2011 fewer accidents in general.
And whilst the number of fatalities in 2021 (34) is the lowest since 2013, it's well above the 23 deaths on the roads recorded in 2013.
Of last year's fatal collisions, almost a third involved motorbikes, worrying statistics when taken into account the fact that these vehicles account for just 12% of all vehicles in the province.
Of the 34 people who died on Alicante's roads last year, within 24-hours of the accident, 10 were motorcyclists. A further 54 were seriously injured and 209 suffered minor injuries. Overall in 2021, motorbikes were involved in a total of 235 accidents with casualties on interurban roads, around 19%.
"The figures for deaths and injuries among motorcyclists clearly reflect the greater vulnerability of these drivers, especially when more vehicles are involved in the accident. This circumstance occurred on three occasions, and the other people were not injured," added the provincial traffic department.
Although almost a third of last year's fatal accidents occurred on motorways or dual carriageways, the highest volume of serious collisions took place on 'conventional' roads.
The most tragic occurred early October 1 2021 on the CV-83 near Pinoso in which three people lost their lives and three others were injured during a head-on collision between two vehicles in foggy conditions.
Days later, on October 13, there were two fatal collisions in the province. A young girl died later in hospital and five others were hurt following a crash on the CV-853 near Elche, and a woman was killed and three other people injured when their car overturned on the CV-734 in Javea.
Whilst the figures make grisly reading, according to the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, overall fatal road accidents have followed a "downward pattern" since 2005 when there were 118 crashes that claimed the lives of 136 victims.
