ARCHIVED - Protecting nesting sea turtles on beaches in Torrevieja
Beach users are asked to call 112 if they see sea turtle nests on Torrevieja beaches in the Vega Baja comarca of Alicante province.
Torrevieja coastline has become popular with nesting sea turtles in recent years, but attempts to reproduce have not always been successful, and conservationists have again launched a campaign to give the creatures the best possible chance.
Last month, the council closed off part of La Mata beach to safeguard a Kentish Plover nesting site, and has now launched a campaign (June until October) to ensure sea turtles get a fighting chance with prominent information boards across the 20 km coastline asking the public to call 112 if they see a nest or turtles spawning at night.
Anyone who sees a turtle laying an egg or a trail in the sand is asked not to shine a torch, to avoid taking photographs or disturbing them in any way "to make sure everything goes well for the sea turtles (tortugas marinas)".
Since 2015, in the Maritime District of Torrevieja - ranging from the mouth of the Segura River to El Mojón (municipal term for Guardamar del Segura, Torrevieja, Orihuela and Pilar de la Horadada), sea turtles have nested every year along the coastline.
