ARCHIVED - Project to transform Cartagena promenade gets underway
The 28-million-euro project plans to create a walkway along the entire seafront in Cartagena, Murcia
An ambitious project to transform the entire seafront in the city of Cartagena is now underway, with the local council planning to create a walkway stretching between the Espalmador and Cala Cortina.
The project has been dubbed ‘Plaza Mayor’ and is expected to take around nine months to complete. In addition to 243,000m2 of seafront promenade, a bicycle lane, benches, shaded areas and efficient illumination are also included in the project’s budget.
New businesses are expected to open along the walkway and near the port, giving a breath of new life to the area.
The idea is to create an open space for residents and visitors to meet, socialise and carry out cultural and sporting activities. By connecting Cala Cortina and the Espalmador beach, the project will allow residents to easily access the beach and other areas like the Santa Lucía neighbourhood without needing a car.
The planting of indigenous species along the promenade is also included in the 28-million-euro project, while sustainable lighting using DALI technology is going to be installed throughout the entire walkway, including in the ‘rest areas’, stairs, ramps and pergolas. This technology allows the illumination and its intensity to be automated, creating different atmospheres in different areas of the promenade and helping to save energy.
