ARCHIVED - Police chase luxury drug-laden yacht sailing from Cartagena to Torrevieja
The yacht loaded with 810 kilos of drugs was eventually intercepted off the coast of Cabo Roig on the Costa Blanca
The Guardia Civil intercepted a luxury yacht crammed with 27 bales of hashish off the coast of Cabo Roig in Alicante province following a half-hour high-speed sea chase.
The yacht was sailing from Cabo de Palos in Cartagena, Murcia, towards Torrevieja when police attempted to stop the boat off the coast of Pilar de Horadada during the early hours of Monday January 17 as part of a routine check of the condition of vessels and crew.
But according to sources, the crew accelerated at full speed and a half-hour sea chase ensued, during which several large packages were thrown overboard.
The yacht was eventually stopped close to Cabo Roig, 10km from the Torrevieja coastline, and officers discovered bales of hashish weighing around 30 kilos each, totalling 810 kilos of drugs.
According to police sources, the 15-metre yacht was "sailing normally without arousing suspicion" before it was stopped, and four men were consequently arrested.
The detainees, three Spaniards aged between 26 and 43, and a Moroccan aged 24-years-old appeared before Orihuela Magistrates' Court and were all remanded in custody.
