ARCHIVED - Police warning after spate of distraction burglaries in Albatera
A number of elderly people's homes have been targeted in Albatera in the Vega Baja comarca, Alicante province.
Police in Albatera are warning residents to be extra vigilant after a number of distraction burglaries, mostly at the homes of elderly people.
In each case, the suspects - normally operating in pairs - used various excuses to get inside the properties, such as claiming to have news from a friend or relative, needing a pen and paper to write down an important phone number or asking to use the bathroom.
Once inside, one of the thieves distracts the victim while the other searches the home for cash and valuables.
As such, the Local Police in Albatera, which is 15km from Orihuela, are urging residents to be on their guard and to "never let a stranger into their home".
They recommend looking through the front door 'peephole' and asking to see identification before opening the door to anybody, and installing extra security measures if possible, such as a door chain.
Anyone who witnesses any suspicious behaviour is asked to call Albatera police on 965 485 001, or Emergencies 112.
