ARCHIVED - Police inspect El Campello dog beach following reports of pet poisoning
Poison and ‘foreign objects’ have been discovered hidden in lumps of meat near the mouth of the Monnegre River in the Alicante town
Officers from the Protection of Nature Service (SEPRONA), and the Canine Unit have been carrying out “thorough inspections” at El Campello’s dog beach following a number of reports of pet poisoning.
Dog owners claim their animals have ingested “harmful substances” hidden inside meat and or simply “discarded by unscrupulous people”.
“Dogs specially trained to locate poisons have gone inch by inch along the beach, and have indicated the exact spot in the undergrowth where a dead rabbit was found,” said El Campello council in a statement.
The dead rabbit has been transferred to a toxicology laboratory to verify whether it was a natural death or the animal died of poisoning.
This type of inspection is carried out routinely, but in light of the reports, the search was considered a necessity.
Both the council and the police are now appealing to the public to report any similar incidents or suspicious sightings of meat or other food left on the beach which could be potentially harmful to animals.
