ARCHIVED - Petrer police probe after viral video shows man hurling pigeon on a rope into the air
Police in the Alicante town of Petrer are treating the incident as possible animal abuse and are appealing for public help
Police in Petrer are investigating viral video footage showing a man repeatedly throwing a pigeon tied to a rope into the air, and are appealing for public help to identify the person in the clip.
The video, which appears to have since been removed from Facebook, was recorded by a local resident on Tuesday morning, February 15 at the entrance to the Jardines Alcalde Vicente Maestre.
According to a statement from Petrer Town Hall, the clip of around seven seconds long shows a man throwing the pigeon with a rope tied to its feet into the air and dragging it back only to throw it again three times.
"This is an old method used by pigeon fanciers to lure another pigeon or pigeons that may have become disorientated down from the trees. It's a practice that has fallen into disuse, as nowadays there is a type of harness so that the animal does not suffer," it added.
Meanwhile, the commissioner of Petrer Local Police, Antonio Amorós, confirmed the video is being investigated as "a possible case of animal abuse in accordance with the Valencian animal protection law".
The commissioner has appealed for the cooperation of the public to help identify the perpetrator and reminded that there are rules and obligations entailed with keeping animals, "with the express prohibition of mistreating them, physically attacking them or subjecting them to any practice that could cause them unnecessary or unjustified harm or suffering".
