ARCHIVED - Passengers will soon be able to use their mobiles on planes throughout the EU
Airlines in Spain and the rest of the EU will provide 5G services to travellers

Travellers will soon be able to use their mobiles for phone calls, messaging and browsing the internet when taking flights in the EU. The European Commission has confirmed in a statement that airlines will shortly have access to 5G technology through a network called ‘picocell’ which will connect the plane to the land mobile network via satellite.
“Passengers on board flights in the European Union (EU) will be able to use their mobile phones to the fullest of their capacity and characteristics, just like with a 5G mobile network on the ground,” the European Commission explained.
In addition, the EC has modified the 5 GHz frequency bands across the European Union, meaning that WiFi networks will be available on buses and in cars.
The statement added that “according to the amendment to the implementing decision, Member States shall make the 5 GHz frequency bands available for use on board road vehicles as soon as possible and no later than 30 June 2023.”
In other travel news, the rules requiring passengers to remove liquids from hand luggage at security may be scrapped as soon as 2024 as several airports in the UK are currently trialling high-tech 3D scanners.
