ARCHIVED - Passengers struggle to board flights to Spain as NHS Covid Pass app crashes
People travelling from the UK to Spain routinely use the mobile app to show proof of vaccination
Panicked travellers from around the UK took to social media on Thursday August 18 to share their dismay when the NHS Covid Pass app failed to work, leaving many stranded at airports struggling to make their flights. Passengers from Britain wanting to enter Spain still have to show proof of a full vaccinations schedule, recovery from Covid or a negative coronavirus test, and the application stores all of these details.
"We are sorry the NHS COVID pass is currently unavailable. At this time there is no alternative route for accessing this information via the NHS App or online," an error message read.
"If you have already downloaded the information, then your access should not be affected."
One businessman was due to fly from Bristol to Valencia early on Friday morning for a work meeting when he discovered that his app wasn’t loading.
32-year-old Jon May said: "I've had all three jabs, and I went to the NHS App... and it said 'service unavailable'. I was like, 'what do you mean, service unavailable? I've got a flight at 6am'."
Mr May had no other proof of his vaccination status and was concerned that there would be a problem with Spanish border control officers.
"If it doesn't work, I'm hoping they just go with it... I have had all my vaccinations, I just can't get the certification," he said.
A similar story was told by 24-year-old Fi Bartlett, who was not allowed to check in online for a flight to Malaga as she couldn’t provide proof of vaccination from the app. Luckily though, she had enough time to spare before her flight to show a paper vaccine certificate at the airport.
NHS Digital said it was "urgently" investigating the matter and the app eventually came back online at 10pm.
