ARCHIVED - Parents and toddler jump overboard after boat malfunctions off the coast of Javea
The family swam to a cove in the Marina Alta, Alicante province, before being rescued.
A fun day out at sea in turned into a nightmare for a French couple and their two-year-old when the steering of their boat failed and waves began pushing the vessel towards Cova Tollada (caves) in Javea on Wednesday afternoon (August 25).
Fearing the boat was about to smash into the rocks, the parents decided the only option was to jump overboard with the toddler in their arms, before swimming towards the cave where they took shelter.
A lifeguard at the Arenetes post in nearby Denia noticed that two boats were very close to the rocks at the entrance to Cova Tallada. He travelled to the area on a jet ski and found that one of the boats was adrift and a family was huddled in the rocks.
A Red Cross and a Maritime Rescue boat were sent to the scene, and thankfully, the young family was unhurt, but very shaken and suffering from mild hypothermia. All three were taken to Arenetes beach in les Rotes where a Basic Life Support ambulance was waiting for them.
Meanwhile, the boat was towed away by the Maritime Rescue Service.
Sadly, a day at the beach did not end so well for a 60-year-old Russian woman who drowned whilst swimming at Saladares beach, in Urbanova, Alicante.
Emergency services performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers, but could not save the woman's life, and she was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after 2.30pm on Wednesday.
Just an hour earlier, a woman was saved from drowning at a beach in Guardamar del Segura in Alicante province, after a drone was launched to lower a life jacket 150 metres out to sea.
The pioneering life saving drone is part of a 'Stop Drowning' initiative launched by the Valencia regional government earlier this month.
