ARCHIVED - Overflowing bins remain an eyesore in Denia
A new waste collection contract has been drawn up to tackle the ongoing problem in the Marina Alta town, Alicante province
Just days after Denia Council agreed to extend its partnership with urban cleaning firm Urbaser, images of mounds of rubbish spilling out of and dumped alongside bins in the town have emerged.
A new contract with "substantial improvements" has been drawn up, that it's hoped will tackle the ongoing problem with more regular collections, particularly in Avenida del Marquesat.
Like many municipalities, Denia has had issues with an accumulation of bin bags and discarded household items at this and other waste collection islands.
But there are concerns the situation has got out of hand in Avenida del Marquesat, where the bins are not only overflowing with bags of rubbish, but more than 20 were dumped on the ground on Sunday night, October 5, causing a health and fire hazard.
By 8am the following morning, the bins had been emptied, but somebody had instead placed their rubbish on the floor.
It's hoped the new contract, which promises more "human and material resources to provide the service required" and replaces an outdated one drawn up 16 years ago, will put a stop to the ugly scenes.
