ARCHIVED - Orihuela and Callosa mountain ranges declared Special Areas of Conservation
The status reinforces the protection of Sierra de Orihuela and Sierra de Callosa de Segura
Sierra de Orihuela and Sierra de Callosa de Segura have both been declared Special Areas of Conservation (SAC), a status that will further safeguard their protection and preservation.
Both mountain ranges are already Sites of Community Importance (SCI) and are included in the Natura 2000.
The new declaration was published today (Friday January 13) in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV), through the Regional Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition.
It explains that the SAC status has been awarded "to protect the environment and the natural heritage of the Valencian Community", and more specifically "the conservation of natural habitats and wild flora and fauna".
The SAC also recognises efforts to "adopt conservation measures to prevent the deterioration of the habitats and the alteration of the species in these areas". These measures are what led to their inclusion in the Natura 2000 Network.
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network of protected areas in the world. It offers a haven to Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
It stretches across all 27 EU countries, both on land and at sea. The ultimate objective of the network is to ensure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats, listed under both the Birds Directive and the Habitats Directive, according to the European Commission.
