ARCHIVED - Orihuela statue vandalised in broad daylight
This is not the first attack on the Nazareno de Orihuela statute in the Vega Baja del Segura comarca of Alicante province.
Vandals have targeted the Nazareno de Orihuela bronze figure which has pride of place outside the Museo de Semana Santa in Plaza de la Merced.
The rod 'Nazarene' (a native or resident of Nazareth) is pictured holding in his right hand was cut off and stolen on Tuesday afternoon, June 1.
In previous attacks, vandals have attempted to bend or cut off a cross at the end of the road, but this time they have cut off and taken the whole thing.
To try to protect the monument from further mindless vandalism, Orihuela's Greater Board of Brotherhoods plans to install CCTV.
The 2.5 metre bronze sculpture of Nazareno de Orihuela was inaugurated on April 13, 2019, and is the work of local sculptor J. Manuel Zambrana.
After the ceremony it was blessed by the chaplain José Antonio Moya.
In a separate unconnected incident, a fire broke out at the Museo de Semana Santa in the early hours of Monday, May 24.
