ARCHIVED - Orihuela signs up to nationwide glass recycling campaign
139 bars, restaurants and hotels in Orihuela in the Vega Baja, Alicante province, will be encouraged to recycle more.
Orihuela has joined 129 other coastal municipalities and signed up to a nationwide Green Flags Movement campaign launched by Ecovidrio, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the recycling of glass.
Green Flags is one of the key initiatives of Ecovidrio's alliance with the hotel and catering industry, and on a national level, almost 130 coastal municipalities in five different autonomous communities, involving around 14,000 hospitality establishments, are taking part.
The initiative brings together local councils and restaurants, bars, chiringuitos and hotels to raise awareness of the importance of recycling, deliberately focusing on a sector that generates 52 per cent of single-use glass packaging.
In order to make it easier for all participating establishments to do thier bit, Ecovidrio will install new igloos and provide businesses, free of charge, with buckets to transport the waste, while a team will tour bars, restaurants and hotels to encourage as many as possible to take part.
And as part of the scheme, municipalities that manage to increase their ratios of glass container collection will receive a "unique recognition" by Ecovidrio for "their efforts to improve awareness in their locality".
In 2020, 2,037,989 kilos of glass was recycled in Orihuela, an average of 26 kilos per person, and with more than 795 recycling bins, the town has an igloo for every 99 inhabitants.
