ARCHIVED - Orihuela police to use drone in crackdown on illegal dumping
Police in the Vega Baja add drone to armory to tackle increase in illegal dumping of garden waste and household items.
Orihuela Local Police has stepped up its campaign against the continued problem of bags of weeds and other garden waste, along with white goods and household items left on streets and beaches in the coastal town with the addition of a drone to monitor the situation from sky and identify offenders.
And together with the local council, is warning that "those who violate the rules surrounding the uncontrolled deposit of pruning and household items on public roads face sanctions".
"Each household can leave a maximum of one cubic metre of pruning, securely bagged and with prior notice to the cleaning service (966 076 100 ext 4500) so that it can be collected," says councillor for public safety, Antonio Sanchez, who has asked residents to "comply with the rules to solve a historical problem experienced across the municipality."
In the last month alone, the Local Police has issued 50 fines to residents for illegally dumping rubbish in the street.
"What we intend is to put an end to a situation of unhealthiness that generates many complaints from neighbours and tourists, and that unfortunately, is a widespread practice in our municipality, especially in urbanisations and residential areas", adds the local authority.
The drone will be utilised over the next few weeks "to increase the effectiveness of this campaign and control violators".
