ARCHIVED - Orihuela medieval market cancelled due to high incidence of Covid
The traditional annual event in the Vega Baja municipality was scheduled to take place from February 4 to 6
An "avalanche" of new infections in Orihuela has forced the Town Hall to cancel next month's traditional three-day medieval market.
The Department of Festivities, responsible for staging the event which was scheduled to take place from February 4 to 6, has deemed that holding the market "poses a high risk" given the large number of people expected to attend and the difficulties in guaranteeing that safety distances and security measures are adhered to avoid the "further spread of infections".
"Health and safety come first," explained councillor for festivities, Mariola Rocamora.
Orihuela Medieval Market is traditionally held in the historic centre of the town which is made up of narrow streets, and attracts hundreds of visitors and artisans from all over the country.
"Objects are shared, drinks and food are consumed and bars and tables are placed in catering areas with a very high percentage of participants standing and moving continuously throughout the event," said Rocamora, adding that whilst the Department of Festivities is aware of the individual responsibility, "we cannot guarantee that everyone will respect the established sanitary rules such as the correct use of masks, distances, disinfection measures."
"We hope the Medieval Market of 2023 will be the preamble to a new and better celebration."
