ARCHIVED - Orihuela cancels Moors and Christians Offering of Flowers festival
The traditional floral offering to patron saints in Orihuela on the Vega Baja, Alicante province will not take place this year.
The traditional Offering of Flowers to Saints Justa and Rufina, patron saints of Orihuela, will have to wait until next year after the Association of Moors and Christians agreed to postpone the festival due to the health crisis.
There were fears over crowding and non-compliance with sanitary measures which have been extended in the Valencia region's three provinces, including Alicante, until July 15, due to a rebound in infections.
And as such, the Local Police in Orihuela have confirmed that the Association of Moors and Christians Festival Santa Justa and Rufina have decided the event, scheduled for July 11, will not take place.
On May 31, the festival association agreed to carry out a series of scaled back activities to celebrate the festival, such as the offering of flowers, but all the events are subject to the regulations imposed by the regional government, and so they too look unlikely to go ahead.
"It would be very difficult to carry out any activities at the moment", said the association, which is now waiting for a decision on what if any Moors and Christians celebrations will be held, which will be made at a meeting of the Festive Central Board on July 5.
The Fiestas of the Reconquest and Moors and Christians are a hugely important part of the municipality's heritage, celebrating the events in 1243 which led to Orihuela being liberated from Moorish rule.
