ARCHIVED - One million euros to build the Mar Menor Observatory research centre
The new ‘Observatory’ in Murcia will look to the sea, not the skies
They’re calling it the Mar Menor Observatory: a new centre being built to promote studies and research which advance the sustainability of the Mar Menor and to monitor the state of the lagoon. Nearly one million euros (994,867 to be exact) have been approved for the new construction in an effort to stem the episodes of anoxia and the mass killings of wildlife in the lagoon.
The Observatory will be responsible for monitoring and tracking the evolution of the Mar Menor and is conceived as a “centre of national and international scientific reference” that will help to bring attention to issues affecting the water quality, raise funds and hopefully suggest actionable solutions that will actually be implemented by the regional government.
Along with legal recourses, scientific knowledge is one of the main pillars on which the recovery of the Mar Menor must be based. The Observatory aims to reinforce the scientific support and advice of all the actions that are promoted to protect the Mar Menor.
