ARCHIVED - One million euro project to create a river walkway in Cehegín
The mayoress has presented a 1-million-euro project which aims to transform the urban centre of Cehegín, in the north-west of the Murcia region
The mayoress of Cehegín, Alicia del Amor, has presented the ‘Cehegín Río’, project, which will create a walkway along the river Argos, as it passes though the urban centre of Cehegín.
The project aims to transform the landscape of the river, providing a new natural area, located next to the river and the Casco Antiguo, for residents and visitors to enjoy, as well as amplifying the open-air tourism offering of the municipality.
The area chosen for the re-make is currently full of invasive reeds, which make it impossible to use and enjoy the area and, in some cases, these plants even prevent pedestrian and vehicular transit along the existing paths and roads.
The Technical Office has carried out the necessary preparation work and the project has been put forward to receive European funding.
The project will take place in two areas, the first of which starts at the “Puente de Piedra” and ends at the Ronda del Casco Antiguo. In this space, all existing weeds and vegetation will be removed on either side of the riverbed. Then, a layer of dirt pavement will be laid and the area will be replanted with native species. Benches, picnic areas and rubbish bins will also be placed along the walkway.
In addition, the existing roads will be maintained, allowing the transit of vehicles necessary for the upkeep and conservation of the area.
The second zone included in the project is the area that reaches from the Ronda del Casco Antiguo until the “Puente Santo”. Here, the same landscaping work will be carried out in order to rescue the pedestrian paths from the reeds. The existing path which runs below the restored “Ladrón de Aguas” Tower will also be recovered.
This project has an approximate cost of one million euros and, according to the mayoress, the main objective is to enhance the historic and cultural heritage surrounding the river in Cehegín.
It will also amplify the offering of walking routes in the municipality, creating an attractive riverside pathway.
