ARCHIVED - One dead and another injured in Marbella motorcycle chase
The Italian men were fleeing from a police checkpoint in the Malaga town when they crashed
One man has died and another is seriously injured after the motorcycle they were riding crashed on the A-7 in Marbella as they fled from police on Saturday September 10. The rider and his passenger, both Italians in their mid-40s, were stopped by a police checkpoint at 10.20pm as they resembled suspects in a series of local thefts of luxury watches.
Since the two men matched the description of the robbers, the Marbella Local Police officers stopped the pair and asked for ID. Instead of complying, the driver sped past the checkpoint and raced onto the motorway.
The traffic cops quickly sprung into action and launched a pursuit, only to be slowed down considerably by a major traffic jam. After breaking through the stalled vehicles and arriving at kilometre 175.5, the Local Police discovered that the snarl up had been caused by a road traffic accident, the victims of which were the two Italian men.
The motorcycle driver died on the spot while his companion suffered serious injuries and was transferred to the Costa del Sol Hospital for treatment, where he remains under police surveillance.
It was later discovered that the vehicle’s numberplate was a fake, and so the passenger will face charges of document falsification and fleeing from police.
