ARCHIVED - Nine out of 10 ICU Covid patients in Alicante not fully vaccinated
92 per cent of patients admitted to intensive care units across the Valencia region in July had not received both doses of vaccine
Nine out of 10 Covid patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) in the Valencian region, including Alicante province, during the week of July 19 to 25, had not been fully vaccinated, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The remainder were fully immunised.
This equates to 58 people who had not received two jabs or a single-dose of Janssen and five people who were immunised.
"The figures are eloquent and demonstrate once again that vaccination is the main asset we have against coronavirus infection", stresses the regional Minister of Health, Ana Barceló.
She also warns that "the virus is still with us" and we "must continue to respect the indications to keep it at bay".
There are still many people who have not received their first dose or are waiting for their second, and "if the vaccinated do not continue to wear the mask, do not keep the safety distance or relax hand hygiene or ventilation, transmission and serious cases of Covid may increase among these cohabitants, partners, friends and close contacts", adds Barceló.
In regards to Covid patients admitted to "normal wards", the percentage of people who had not received the complete vaccination was also much higher - 81.4 per cent - than that of those who were fully immunised (18.6).
The Ministry of Health has stated that in many cases, ward admissions are not always due to the "seriousness of the respiratory infection", there are occasions when it is "preventive in nature, subject to medical criteria to avoid possible complications".
"Vaccines work and clearly reduce the risk of serious hospitalisation and death due to Covid", says Barceló, who is appealing to the those who have not been vaccinated to do so, "to continue raising a collective barrier that hinders the transmission of the virus and protects society as a whole".
To accelerate immunisation across the Valencia region, the Ministry of Health plans to complete the vaccination of young people this month with an additional 580,000 doses of vaccine.
