ARCHIVED - Nine boats carrying irregular immigrants reach Alicante coast in three days
A total of 107 people were onboard the pateras intercepted on the Costa Blanca, including eight children
Thirteen irregular immigrants, all adult men, were rescued from a drifting boat located 33 miles from the coast of Javea on Monday night, October 18, the ninth patera (small dinghy) to reach the Alicante coastline in three days.
According to the skipper of the Salvamar Mirfak, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, the "precarious vessel was discovered drifting without an engine".
The 13 passengers were taken to Alicante Port where Red Cross staff checked them over and tested for possible cases of Covid.
According to the Red Cross, a further eight boats were intercepted in the province at the weekend, with a total of 94 irregular immigrants on board, including eight children, all of whom were also taken to Alicante Port and assisted by volunteers.
Maritime Rescue services intercepted five boats carrying 57 irregular immigrants that had reached the Marina Baixa and Vega Baja areas of Alicante province the previous weekend.
And in the Region of Murcia earlier this week, more than 200 immigrants managed to reach the coastline in 10 different boats in just 48 hours.
