ARCHIVED - New excavation on the Isla del Fraile site in Águilas reveals historic secrets
The ancient archaeological site, located in the municipality of Águilas (Murcia), dates back to the fifth century
The second excavation campaign at the isla del Fraile archaeological site in the municipality of Águilas has revealed that the site is much older than was previously thought.
Between September 6 and 18, a team of 20 archaeologists and students from universities across Spain have been excavating the site and have discovered graves from the Islamic period, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, as well as a late-Roman salting pool.
In addition, this year, two large rooms, which are in exceptional condition for a site this old, were excavated and experts believe that the three-metre-tall rooms served as warehouses in the 5th century A.D.
The isla del Fraile is the only site cataloged as a Site of Cultural Interest both on land and underwater in the Region of Murcia due to its unique location. Studying the marine environment around the site has allowed experts to understand its various historical phases as well as gaining insight about the diet and fishing methods used by the inhabitants of the island throughout history.
This unique archaeological site has received international attention and collaborators from Madrid, Jaén, Barcelona, Australia and Japan have all visited and studied the site in Águilas.
