ARCHIVED - Nationwide power cut across Spain on Saturday coincided with 42-degree heat
Aircon units and fridges stopped all over Spain just as the latest heatwave reached its peak
Just as the latest episode of extreme temperatures reached its peak in Spain on Saturday 24 July, with air conditioning units in millions of homes being switched on as temperatures reached highs of 42 degrees in parts of Málaga, Valencia and Murcia, a widespread power cut brought discomfort and inconvenience to an estimated 640,000 household across the country.
The cut has been attributed to “an incident involving a hydroplane” and a high-tension power line in southern France, where electricity was being transferred to the Spanish national grid. As a result, aircon units, fridges and even telephone connections were left inoperative for around 90 minutes in homes and businesses in numerous areas of Spain, from Andalucía and Murcia in the south to Madrid in the centre and Castilla y León, Catalunya, Navarra and the Basque Country in the north.
Fortunately, the consequences were largely limited to inconvenience and a certain amount of discomfort: had the cut occurred on a weekday many manufacturing businesses and others would doubtless have been far more seriously affected.
Equally fortunately for many, the problem was fully resolved relatively quickly, and the contents of fridges and freezers were saved before disaster struck!
