ARCHIVED - Murcia visitor centre opens Gastrobar in the mountains outside Murcia under work experience scheme
Six trainees form a cooperative and offer Murcian cuisine at the La Luz visitors centre in the pine forests of El Valle
A new gastrobar has opened at the La Luz visitors centre in the mountains of El Valle, close to Santo Ángel a few kilometres south of the city of Murcia, as the result of a joint initiative launched by the Town Hall and the Ucomur group of cooperatives.
The idea of the project is that half a dozen students and entrepreneurs from the Escuela de Ensayo Empresarial will manage the venture, perfecting their culinary skills while at the same time gaining experience in starting up a business. The first clients were welcomed last Thursday with a gastronomic menu and a wine list featuring products of the Region of Murcia, following the collaboration of numerous companies and professionals already active in the hospitality sector.
But the attractions of the venue are not limited to food and drink: La Luz also offers a chance to learn more about the history and culture of the regional park of El Valle y Carrascoy through a visit to the museum and a series of guided walks in the mountains close the sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuensanta, one of the most iconic locations in and around the regional capital.
The gastrobar is open from Thursday to Sunday from 12.00 to 18.00, with a sampler menu available at 22 euros. Bookings should be made by telephone on 722 642037 or by email to escueladeensayolaluz@gmail.com.
The Town Hall’s “Escuela de Ensayo” initiative is aimed at unemployed people in the hospitality sector and was set up by the Town Hall to create opportunities for new start-up ventures. When the six participants have been selected they will be incorporated into a cooperative with funding from the Town Hall to cover social security costs, and the council is also providing furniture and equipment as well as a head chef for the gastrobar in La Luz.
The venture will last for 11 months, providing experience for both kitchen and serving staff, and it is anticipated that when it is over another group will be selected for a similar project next year.
