ARCHIVED - Murcia Town Hall buys climate bonds to offset excess carbon emissions
Giant anteaters of Amazonia among the beneficiaries as Murcia compensates for carbon emissions
The Town Hall of Murcia has acquired “climate bonds” to compensate for the emission of 11 tons of CO2 per year in a program to combat deforestation in the north-east of Brazil, thus cancelling out the contamination of the atmosphere which is calculated to have resulted from communication and environmental awareness activities in Majal Blanco and alongside the River Segura at La Contraparada.
In this way the council has remained faithful to its commitment to continue widening awareness of the need to combat climate change, purchasing the climate bonds through Ecopatrimonio and supporting the “REDD Portel-Pará” Project run by the Global Climate Institute, located within the Amazon.
Amazonia is home to 10 per cent of all known animal species including some which rely on the rainforest for their survival, and the Portel-Pará project is working to prevent unplanned deforestation, logging and attempts to implement pastures. The aim is to avoid over 22 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gas emissions over a 40-year period by managing the land in the form of a “private conservation reserve”.
Among the animals living in the project zone are primates such as the Ka’apor Capuchin and the Black Bearded Saki) and carnivores including the oncilla, the giant otter, the giant anteater the giant armadillo.
