ARCHIVED - Murcia to get a new bullfighting and matador school
The city is looking to open a new training centre for bullfighters to revive the bloodthirsty sport, which has declined in popularity recently
The Directorate General of Local Administration of Murcia has published a draft order outlining the regulatory bases for the granting of public subsidies to implement a bullfighting school in the city.
These grants will aim to subsidise the theoretical and practical training of new bullfighting professionals such as matadors (‘toreros’ in Spanish), to contribute to the promotion of bullfighting and continue to expand this sport in the Region of Murcia.
While it is a part of Spanish culture and history that still features in many local fiestas, support for bullfighting and other bull-related activities has declined sharply in recent years thanks to increased awareness of the cruelty to the animals.
In fact, the only reason that rearing bulls for fighting and sporting purposes remains profitable for breeders in Spain is that they are propped up by government subsidies meant for livestock farming of cows, pigs and sheep.
Last October, the Spanish government considered debating a prohibition on bullfighting across the country, but so far no agreement on a legal embargo has been reached.
Presumably the authorities in Murcia want to open their bull school to breathe new life into the ailing bullfighting sector, but hopefully the force of public opinion will persuade them against it.
