ARCHIVED - Murcia to discount bus tickets by 30 per cent until June 2023
The Region has extended its initial discounts by an extra 6 months to keep the cost of living down for families
The regional government in Murcia has decided to extend its 30% reduction on the price of intercity public transport tickets for a further 6 months, a measure that was initially only planned to last from September to December.
Now, this discount will be applied for 10 months straight on public buses in the Region of Murcia, from September 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023.
The Regional Minister for Development and Infrastructures, José Ramón Díez de Revenga, announced the extension of the discount on regional public transport, and argued that “the initial four-month reduction is not enough to lighten the burden of public transport spending on households, because everything suggests that the effects of the [cost-of-living] crisis will continue beyond December 31.”
“With the extension of this measure we aim to provide economic relief to families in the current situation of rising prices, while encouraging them to stop using their private vehicles and use public transport instead,” said the councillor, who pointed out that “this has a positive impact on people’s health through the reduction of polluting emissions.”
This latest announcement is part of a wider scheme to promote public transport and improve the bus service in the Murcia Region. Just last week, it was announced that the Region would resume its bus service between Corvera aiport and Mar Menor towns such as San Pedro del Pinatar, San Javier and Los Alcázares.
These bus ticket discounts are in addition to a measure brought in by the central government in Spain to provide free train tickets for short- and medium-distance rail journeys in the last four months of this year.
