ARCHIVED - Murcia Segura basin on pre-alert for drought
The reservoirs in the Murcia Region are not even half full after an extended dry period
After much of the Murcia Region was swamped under a deluge of rain during March and April the high temperatures and sunshine have returned, scorching the community in the second-warmest June in history. As a result, water is once again becoming a scarce commodity as the long summer months stretch ahead, and the Segura basin is drying up.
After being topped up with 180 litres per square meter of water in the spring, the global scarcity index, an indicator used by the Segura Hydrographic Confederation to monitor the water levels, has registered a worrying drop in recent weeks.

As a result, the headwaters have now entered the pre-alert level for drought but thankfully, the rivers along the left and right banks of the Segura are still within normal water levels for this time of year.
In June, the rain gauges measured an average of 4.7 litres per square metre and now the reservoirs contain reserves of 488 cubic hectometres, three fewer than last week.
In all, the basin has 71 cubic hectometres less water than this time last year, and 45 fewer hectometres than normal. As a result, the Segura reservoirs are only at 42.8% of their total capacity ahead of a summer which promises to be hotter than usual.
