ARCHIVED - Murcia rightwing Vox Group fails in its crusade to ban LGBTI flag
A motion brought by the Parliamentary Group to outlaw the gay pride flag on public buildings has been shot down
The motion of the Vox Parliamentary Group to stop public institutions in Murcia from flying the LGBTI+ rainbow flag because it is “unconstitutional” was voted down by a massive majority.
The motion urged the Governing Council to start handing out fines to those institutions that, in the opinion of the Vox spokesman, Juan José Liarte, “break the principle of ideological neutrality”. The initiative was first presented last week when the Regional Assembly of Murcia itself raised the rainbow flag on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
Every other single person in the Assembly voted against the motion, which also attempted to create a complaints procedure for people to present their displeasure at the flag being flown. Only the Vox Parliamentary Group voted in favour.
The spokesperson for the leftwing Podemos party underscored that the rainbow flag symbolises “a message of peace, love and respect for diversity” and that tens of thousands of people in the Region of Murcia feel represented by it.
“We live in a respectful and open region,” she said, “and it is a source of pride that the rainbow flag flies in the seat of the democratic parliament.”
