Murcia photo of the month May 2025
Here’s the top image of the month taken by the Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC)
LADCC members stretched the boundaries last month in their attempt to capture portrait photos for this month’s competition ‘Portrait’. The club were kindly given permission to make use of a quiet corner inside La Cafetería Sin Nombre, in Los Alcázares, and set up their own mini studio, complete with studio lights, reflectors, models and, of course, a big camera crew! A very social morning was spent with the young owner, Tamara, who also did her own bit of modelling for the photographers!
A very detailed brief was given to members on the subject of ‘Portraiture’ and many photographs were taken during the session of models from LADCC, Tamara and an incredibly well-behaved dog called Missie who just seemed to sit and smile at the camera to order! A big thank you goes to Gary Hull for organising this!
However, as well as the photos taken during this session, there were many other superb photographs taken by members to evaluate and consider for the monthly competition, including family and personal photos, pets, black and white images, and group images (which can still class as a portrait shot to the surprise of some!). There were 26 entries in all, which took a lot of time to consider and judge.
The winning picture was taken by Debra Duncan during a visit to the Edinburgh festival last year. On a busy main street, Debra waited for the right moment to capture a gentleman having a coffee in a doorway. She managed to capture this beautiful portrait in a carefully constructed photographic moment. Using a 70-100mm lens, which enabled her to zoom in, Debra captured his momentary glance from the opposite side of the street, thereby being unintrusive and getting a very natural moment.

In second place was an endearing image of a young three-year-old boy looking out of a train window. His great-grandfather grabbed his camera and managed to capture his lovely expression in a photo entitled “Who blew that whistle?!”

However, some amazing images were obtained from the first ever photo shoot in La Cafetería Sin Nombre. New member Peter van Vliet entered these two photos of Tamara and Missie. Well done Peter, a great first competition for you!

Next month’s competition is ’The Weather’. Those of us living in Murcia have seen a few months of unsettled weather, so it will be interesting to see what photographs our members come up with.
The club usually meets twice a month, with an indoor ‘workshop’, at the Las Claras centre in Los Alcázares, on the first Tuesday of every month and, often, an outing toward the end of the month, where the group gets together to collectively work on the topic for the monthly competition.
The club welcomes new members, either visitors or residents, as with modern day technology everyone can keep in contact for training sessions, sharing knowledge etc or more regularly via ‘group chats’ and they are interested in hearing from anyone who would like to join them when the opportunity arises. You will be put on a waiting list and be contacted when a space becomes available.
If you would like more information about the club, or would like to go along to a meeting, please do not hesitate to look at the website www.ladcc.es or email informationladcc@gmail.com

Share the pleasure of photography in the Mar Menor area
The Los Alcázares Digital Camera Club (LADCC) was founded in 2006 and was originally called the LA Digital Cafe, where members met over a coffee to discuss photography. This quickly developed into a more formal programme of monthly photo competitions and outings to places of photographic interest.
Over the years, the club has adapted to the changes in camera technology and techniques, and continued throughout Covid by using ‘Zoom’ for online meetings and learning sessions.
Fast forward to 2024, and the club is now a small, enthusiastic, friendly group where members encourage and support each other at the start of, and throughout, their photographic journey. The group includes a wide range of people with varying skills, all of whom are happy to share techniques, tips and ideas to improve one’s hobby.
They have monthly competitions and outings that provide an opportunity to explore different aspects of photography and develop camera craft and artistic skills. Their indoor sessions may include in-house training, reviews of monthly competitions or planning outings to cover topics discussed.
They meet once a month at the ‘Centro Cultural las Claras’ in Los Narejos, which has super facilities and ample parking. Any outings are usually towards the end of the month to link in with our regular competitions.
