ARCHIVED - Murcia Old Jail reopens as a centre for contemporary culture
The historic Cárcel Vieja will officially reopen to the Murcia public next week
The project has taken a lot of work and experienced more than a few delays but this week, the almost 100-year-old Murcia Old Jail (Cárcel Vieja) threw open its doors following a huge renovation project. Gone are the dark, dank corners that once housed unfortunate prisoners. The historic building now boasts clean lines and bright, airy rooms, several of which are given over to displaying the extensive renovation of the jail and the exciting plans for the future.
The Old Jail has been reborn as the Centre of Contemporary Culture 'Cárcel Vieja' and from next week, when it officially opens to the public, it will host a wide range of artistic activities in a variety of languages.
The cultural program kicks off with the exhibition 'Ethereal Walls', which will run until September and covers three rooms on the first floor of the building as well as one of the connecting corridors. The showcase allows visitors to follow first-hand the architectural project which has made the renovation of the iconic landmark possible and includes details of the interior design and objectives that have been achieved so far.
It also lays out plans for the next phase of the project.
As of Monday June 27, the Cárcel Vieja will be open to the public from Monday to Saturday between 10am and 10pm.
Authorities in Murcia now hope to receive help from Next Generation funds for the restoration of the second building, the prison itself, which contains cells and interior patios for prisoners and if everything goes to plan, the project could get off the ground by the end of the year.
"The technical project is drafted and in the review phase," said the mayor, adding that it will take around 7.5 million euros to redevelop the 3,600 square-metre space.
